What is ENDOWMENT?

Endowment is a contribution to an educational institution in the form of cash, stocks, investment funds, building construction, capital assets, or any form of endowment donation, subject to agreed terms and conditions of use.

Clause 48(1): Power of the Board to Obtain Funds, Receive Gifts, etc. The Board may, on behalf of the University, seek funds for the academic and research activities of the University and accept as income, gifts, bequests, subsidies, legacies, or otherwise, property or money to assist the financial needs of the University on any terms as determined by it.

Clause 49: Property Given for Specific Purposes Shall be Accounted for Separately: All property or money given for a specific purpose shall be used and administered according to the purpose for which the property or money was given and shall be accounted for separately.

“Endowed”
Donations are invested, and only the investment returns are utilized.

“Expendable”
Donations designated by the sponsor for use and utilization until depleted without the need for investment.

“Restricted”
The sponsor specifies the use of the donation for a particular purpose.

“Unrestricted”
The sponsor does not specify the use of the donation for a particular purpose, granting the institution freedom in its utilization.

Endowment receipt determination in the form of ‘endowment’ also includes conditional receipts over time by sponsors, where the sponsor stipulates that the principal contribution is to be returned after the agreed-upon period has elapsed.

A suitable donation for an endowed university could be a significant financial contribution that is intended to provide long-term support for the institution’s academic and research activities. Here are some examples:

  1. Endowed Professorships: Funding a named professorship to attract and retain top faculty members in a specific field of study.

  2. Endowed Chairs: Establishing an endowed chair to support distinguished faculty members in their research and teaching endeavors.

  3. Scholarships and Fellowships: Creating endowed scholarships or fellowships to provide financial assistance to students based on merit or need.

  4. Research Centers: Endowing a research center or institute to support groundbreaking research initiatives in a particular area of study.

  5. Infrastructure Development: Donating funds for the construction or renovation of academic buildings, laboratories, libraries, or other facilities.

  6. Programmatic Support: Providing endowment funds to support specific academic programs, departments, or interdisciplinary initiatives.
